Forecasts of air pollution for The Netherlands

KNMI, RIVM and TNO are setting up a new operational air quality forecasting service for the Netherlands, partly financed by the Dutch project SMOGPROG, financed by NIVR. It will become fully operational in the Summer of 2008. The Dutch air-quality service will be used by public authorities for information to the public, for air quality warnings and possible policy measures in order to keep pollution levels in agreement with EU directives. O3 and NO2 maps and peak values, NO2 averages and columns, O3 8 hour maximum averages and time series of RIVM LML air quality monitoring stations will be presented on a public internet site developed by KNMI and RIVM.

The existing low resolution statistical forecast model for the Netherlands will be replaced by the high resolution chemistry transport models Chimere and Lotos-Euros, which explicitly simulate physical, chemical and dynamical atmospheric processes. These models will be coupled to high resolution meteorological forecasts of the KNMI HIRLAM model, and the TNO high resolution emission database.
